The Thing On The Towpath: Ashridge Episode 2
When Ben and Sheila Benson make their way from their moored narrowboat on a cold January night to the sanctuary of The Admiral Benbow, and perhaps a pub quiz, only Sheila feels the strange energy of the towpath beneath the old canal bridge.
If they hadn't walked that way, would they have escaped? If they'd stayed for one more pint at the Benbow, would Ben and Sheila have avoided their fate?
Someone knows, the rest of us guess.

I find it interesting that in the 50s you had to be a trad wife regardless. Now a woman must be an independent career woman regardless. Feminism promised choice but in the end refused to give it. Dont believe me? Just say you are happy housewife and mother to hear the screeching. It's the same with your taste in politics or stories. Say your preference and again with the screeching. One day I hope our society can read the nursery rhyme Jack Sprat could eat no fat His wife could eat no lean And so between them both They licked the platter clean And think "isn't it good we are not carbon copies of each other. Isn't it good we complement each other. There is something for everyone. Hallelujah!"

Relax. It's his idea, he wrote the whole story, he wrote the script, he plays some of the characters, he produced it and uploaded it and did the artwork. It's pure Tony...experimenting with "radio" drama as an addition to his channel, supplementing the stories he continues to narrate across his now numerous channels. It's his brainchild. Try it, you might like it.

I think you did well, adding that information regarding the significance of Christian theology to the author. 1. The author's cultural perception of and belief in the finitude of life and existence juxtaposed with what he considered the divine perception of eternity. 2. If one accepts eternity, then ones perception of time expands, and likewise the expands the significance of your moral and ethical choices. Thanks for highlighting the context, it clarified the themes. This story from a century ago and a different culture echoes in eternity as well!

I like the ones in your 'normal' accent - reminds me of home. I grew up in Workington and Cockermouth but a few years in the USA and London and then 30+ years in Leicester and my accent is now all over the place. Plus my parents are both from Kendal so there's a touch of that too. It varies depending on which words I use. To me a back alley will always be a 'ginnel' - not a 'jitty' as they say here in Leicester, and a stream will always be a beck, but when I say 'cob' now I do imagine a bun, not a small stocky horse. I did learn to say gah-rahj, not garridge but a few laals, t'olds and ayes still sneak in... I didn't know about the nickname for Carlisle people (though someone from elsewhere did tell me that apparently Carlisle only counts as a city because it's the biggest place in Cumbria, it wouldn't be one if it were anywhere else). Apparently Workington and Whitehaven people both use the 'disparaging' term 'jam eaters' about the other - each suggesting the others were too poor to put meat in their sandwiches...
